School loan refund

Okay… so we recieved a check in the mail today. It was for…

…DRUM ROLL PLEASE…

$1.75

Now wait, I’m not putting down small change. It was a REFUND check from my wife’s school loan. We had overpaid them and they were sending me a check.

Wow! Pretty cool. The only problem? We PAID her school loan off…

THREE YEARS AGO!

Don’tchya just love that? If the shoe was on the other foot… and I was one day late? I would have been charged a financing fee, they would revoke the diploma, and remove one child from our house (which in our case… would be our only child).

I love it when financial institutions stick ya with fees and yet they can deliver poor service, slow responses, and extensive excuses.

Silly rabbit… complain’ins for kids.

So I’ll just look at the positive side and realize that TODAY… I can purchase a 99¢ burger, one of those gigantus pieces of round purple gum at the toystore and still have 5¢ to spare.

Man… what a good day!

Thanks for listening,

PS - at the bottom of the check it says…

The check must be cashed within 180 days.

LOL - really?

Twitter is down

As most of you on Twitter have already acutely become aware today… Twitter is down!

twitter status

twitter status

A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) is usually a malicious attempt to create havoc for a website — which ruins it for the intended users (us on twitter). Here is a graphic layout of what happens.

The United States Computer Emergency Response Team defines symptoms of denial-of-service attacks to include:

  • Unusually slow network performance (opening files or accessing web sites)
  • Unavailability of a particular web site
  • Inability to access any web site
  • Dramatic increase in the number of spam emails received—(this type of DoS attack is considered an e-mail bomb)[2]

Denial-of-service attacks can also lead to problems in the network ‘branches’ around the actual computer being attacked. For example, the bandwidth of a router between the Internet and a LAN may be consumed by an attack, compromising not only the intended computer, but also the entire network.

If the attack is conducted on a sufficiently large scale, entire geographical regions of Internet connectivity can be compromised without the attacker’s knowledge or intent by incorrectly configured or flimsy network infrastructure equipment.

(above direct from wikipedia)

One method slows down your internet connection (which is sometimes hard to determine if it’s a natural growth or malicious attack) and the other completely stops the ability to access the site. This seems to be the case for Twitter today on Thursday, August 6, 2009.

Watch out…

In the Police and Justice Act 2006, the United Kingdom specifically outlawed denial-of-service attacks and set a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Tweet ya later - er… or not!

Are you what’s good?

Today a friend of mine jumped on ichat with me and said…

“Hey man, what’s good?”

(while I know he was just saying it casually — as in “what’s up man”)

I responded… “God!”. He responded… “good answer”.

Then it hit me, when God asks Jesus “Hey man, what’s good?” — Does he say… “Matt”? (insert your name)

Are you what’s good in this world? I don’t mean “good” as in a specific behavior with an angelic halo above your head. I mean “good” for this world, your community, your family, your friends.

Are you spreading what is good around you? Do you see people around you spreading the “good” in this world?

So I leave with this simple question… “Hey… what’s good?”

I love you stinky face!

Friday, May 1, 2009 16:33

I was putting my son to bed the other nite when he said something pretty funny.

I finished talking with him and gave him a kiss. I was walking out the door and I said…

“I love you buddy”.

“I love you too dad… even though you’re stinky”

“What?” I’m stinky?

“no, STICKY”

“I’m sticky?” (at this point I started feeling around for something sticky on me.

“I mean, PRICKLY”

“Oh… I’m prickly!”

He loves me even though I don’t shave! ;)

I went from stinky to sticky to prickly in three seconds flat! Not bad!

Reminds me of: “I Love You Stinky Face”

::: random sweetness :::

So we walk into Steak-n-Shake the other day and waited to be seated. Why? because the sign said “Please Wait To Be Seated”. While standing there (which is close to the register) a woman was walking by to pay for her meal. She turned to her family sitting at the nearby booth and asked, “Anyone want a cookie?”

Of course I couldn’t pass this up… so I said, “I’ll take one!”, and we all sorta chuckled.
*insert cheesy laughter trak*

The waitress sat us down and we began to look at the menu. About 20 seconds go by and this hand tosses a bag down on the table and runs out the door.

It was that lady… and she bought me a cookie!

We sat there and laughed at the fact that she really did buy me a cookie for 59¢ — it was awesome. This is actually something that I would do and I loved the fact that someone did a strange thing for someone else. So we decided to pay it forward.

When we were paying for our meal… we purchased two cookies and had the waitress deliver it to a table with two kids.

One cookie turned into two. Pretty sweet deal :)

So… randomly buy someone a cookie today — you might just make their day…

(and someone else’s, and someone else’s and so on)

PS - thx @CameronHerold for the RT :)

PSS - gotta love Steak-n-Shake commercials!

Business Practices from Biblical Principles

I’m reading through Seth Godin’s book The Dip — a book communicating when to quit and when to stick with it. It can apply to any facet of life.

Here are some concepts that I walked away with…

  • If the tough times were easy to get through… everybody would be on the other side.
  • Getting through the Dip (i.e. the valley, the tough times, the negative comments, the slumping of sales, etc) is the challenge and completing puts you on the other side where few are standing.
  • You need to determine, quickly, if you’re ready to take on the Dip. Sometimes quitting is smarter than sticking in the humdrum job that makes life mediocre. Stop doing a million things.

I believe Moses, Job, Joseph, Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Milton Hershey (and many more) might have felt “the dip” at one point or another.

These people took on adversity (or moments of hurdles) and presented it in the form of success later in life.

We see it all the time in movies. The character needs to be “transformed” through his/her tough circumstance. So we see him “work” through the problem and come out on the other side triumphant. The problem is that we see him do this in a 4-minute song. So when we finish the movie inspired to “rock the world” with OUR quest… we wonder why we can’t make it. We hit the wall and wonder where all the people are that should be cheering us on… or watching how we “grit” through it. But they’re not around… and we have to finish it all by ourselves. So when no one is there to motivate us, OR the inspirational music isn’t playing… it’s easier to lie there and say, “No one’s looking… I think I’ll just stop.” Realize that nothing gets accomplished in a 4-minute song (unless of course your challenge is to write a 4-minute inspirational song for a movie that I just described).

It takes the ability to evaluate if you’re “in it” for the long haul and persist through it.

The Business Practice:

Persevering through the challenges to eventually stand on a hill that few have climbed.

The Biblical Principle:

John 1:2-4

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

The basic principle of “perseverance” is key in life. Hanging in there, stick-with-it-ness, a resolve despite difficulties is a practice that we all can, and should, work through.

SO…

  • Hang in there during the times when your business seems to be slowing down.
  • Hang in there during the time when homeschooling seems to be a tiresome climb.
  • Hang in there when your classes seem to overwhelm you.
  • Hang in there when you’re not sure if your blog will communicate importance.
  • Be brave at your workplace and exemplify to others your value for “family-time”.
  • Process those ideas that have been spinning in your head — they’re there to bring you to another level.
  • Finish that garden you started.
  • Jump back on that treadmill.
  • Pick up that pen and start writing again.

So the question?
Are you ready to stand on the hill that few have walked on?

::: With my son, on a roof, in December :::

After taking all day to set up Christmas lights with my son… we ended the day on the roof… amidst the glow-of-lights around the rim of the house and store-bought stars hanging from our large oak tree.

The clouds were like small ripples flowing like river past the moon — which, from our view, was as big and round as a dime. The clouds masked the moons’ full glow.

We were armed with a flashlight, two binoculars, and a book about clouds — which was odd at night I know — but you should have seen this moon.

As we gazed at the night sky… my newly turned nine year old said,

“Dad, can we talk?”

Eyeing through the binoculars at the moon… I wasn’t listening too well.

“Dad, I can’t take you serious with those binoculars on your face.”

(I slowly rolled them down my side).

“Yes, buddy, what do you want to talk about?”

He said, “Sometimes when I’m having a really fun time, like today, I think of all the people in the world that are having a bad day. I mean, it just doesn’t seem fair when I’m having this great day… and they have something bad happen in their life.”

I tried not to interrupt with my lessons or “dad” thoughts — so I just patiently waited.

He continued, “I feel bad that I’m having such a great time when bad things are happening to people around the world. I feel like I should be helping them. I always picture that time you bought a sub sandwich for that homeless man who was digging through the trash”

(And here I thought he wasn’t paying attention)

“Shouldn’t I be doing something to help everyone?”

Now I am thinking… WOW… this is awesome! I said to him, “We might not help everyone, everywhere. But… God does give us opportunities to help people… at the right moment. There’s probably someone on the other side of the world (right now) who is helping someone else get through a bad day. We have to make sure we’re looking for the opportunities around us when they pop up… like the man that needed food. It was our turn to help him.”

He lay there on the roof looking up at the moon with his hands clasped behind his head… pondering.

I explained, “This is why mommy and daddy desire to take you on mission trips, to experience other people and help when needed. But it starts right here in our own neighborhood. That’s awesome you want to help and I’m proud of you. We’ll be on the lookout for more opportunities.”

At that moment a sliver of a complete, clear, cloudless patch floated by the moon… it was brighter than ever.

“Oooh dad… look at that!”

We grabbed our binoculars and began dialing in on the moon. And that was it… a moment of complete awesomeness with my son, on a roof, in December.

::: IN YOUR FACE ::: my 2¢ on branding.

Thursday, December 4, 2008 18:27
Posted in category communication, creative

Your LOGO is your face! (first impression)

We all have a face. Some more impressive than others… but all of us have one.
(some even spend big bucks to improve their “first impressions”)

Your logo serves as your first impression to your organization.

This logo may include:
TYPE: (FedEx)
YOUR FACE: (Chris Pirillo)
ICON: (Apple)

No matter how large or small…it simply identifies your organization.
Your logo says, “Hi, I’m Matt” (well, uno… insert your name there).

Your BRAND is the lasting impression you leave behind!

It’s why we remember you.

  • It’s why Target came out of nowhere (when Wal-Mart and K-Mart were already in the race) and moved up the chain.
  • It’s why we know some obscure zany guy named Weird Al Yankovich – who made money on singing other artists’ songs.

They all produced consistent efforts to keep their identity in front of you in creative ways.

What’s worth remembering is worth repeating.

Let me say that again, what’s worth remembering is worth repeating. That’s what branding does. It’s the consistent reproduction of who you are (and where you’re going).

So… whether you’re a fortune 500 company or a guy selling shirts on the side of the road, BRAND yourself!

Here are some random ideas, in no particular order, which my brain discharged:

  • Get a catch phrase – say it all the time (without being annoying).
  • Capitalize on color consistency – colors play on our emotions and can leave impressions.
  • Make personal connections – people desire relationships.
  • Wear your brand everywhere – this is literal and figurative. Always communicate to your audience. You don’t have to shout! Just a whisper will do.

Hey… I’m not an expert by any means… I’m just the GURU ;)
